For the last five years of her career, Lu Porter has been serving as the Executive Director of the Evansville African-American Museum. Responsible for the daily operations of the museum, Lu is enjoying the opportunity to serve the community in this role. She states, “I have always maintained community relationships and love to help build consensus and improve social and economic conditions.”
In her role, Lu oversees volunteers, staff and resources, implements annual budgets, manages programs and activities, builds partnerships with other public and private entities, is responsible for fostering long-term development and execution of the Museum’s strategic plan, policies, and goals. She also provides visionary leadership for the Museum, consensus building, management, operational effectiveness, and achieving targeted financial objectives.
Lu excels in diverse community relationships, compliance assessment, resource development, marketing, visibility, and strategic planning. Her ability to create a welcoming and responsive constituent experience also contributes to her success in running the Museum.
Holding an Associate of Arts degree in Business Development, Lu is certified in Management, Skill Path, and Banking. She has been a member of Ivy Tech Community Foundation Board for the past 21 years, a lifetime member of ECHO Community Healthcare, Evansville Habitat for Humanity Emeritus Board, Vanderburgh County Historical Society Board and member of Indiana Tourism Council.
Other affiliations include The Women’s Fund of Evansville, The Black Women Task Force, Glenwood Neighborhood Association, Deaconess Women’s Hospital Advisory Council, University of Evansville Diversity and Inclusion Committee, University of Southern Indiana Liberal Arts Council, Leadership Evansville, NAACP, AED Heart Saver Committee, Chamber of Commerce and an Association of African-American Museums member.
Lu is a member of Johnson Temple Church of God in Christ and serves as the Financial Secretary. She has been married to Jake Q. Porter Sr. for 44 years. They have three beautiful children and four grandchildren. Her hobbies included reading, crocheting, walking, singing and listening to all types of music. She is a person of encouragement.
