Research shows that the main reason why kids choose not to use alcohol, tobacco, or drugs is because of their PARENTS – because of a parent’s positive influence and because kids know it would disappoint their parents. That’s why it is so important that parents build strong relationships with their kids and talk to them early and often about substance use.

Parents and community leaders will learn about the world of drug use through a teenager’s eyes through the collaboration of the session leaders.
• Addiction is Real teaches and encourages parents to take a more proactive approach to drug prevention and early intervention as well as with alleviating barriers and stigma related to addiction.
• Vanderburgh County Prosecutor Nick Hermann will share insight on local drug trends, the criminal courts and rehabilitative efforts for those in the grips of addiction.
• Andrea Grace Phillips, the mother of a young man addicted to drugs, will share from her family’s experience.

This session, with the interactive Hidden in Plain View exhibit, will help you have those conversations to help lay a strong foundation for your kids, so that they can stand on their own two feet and withstand the pressures of drug use. You’ll be challenged and encouraged in the conversation preparation process. We’re all in this together. No one is immune.
